Merry Christmas everyone! Thought I’d post this weeks page a day early as a present to all my loyal readers.
Today is the beginning of Food For the Soul. The artist for the story is by Jason Ho. You may remember an earlier tale he illustrated for me, From the Stars. If you enjoyed it, you certainly won’t be disappointed with this one. Henry Huang applied his talents on the colours.
When I wrote this story I tried something a little different and submitted drafts to Digital Webbing, in their writers forum looking for critiques. I received lots of valuable advice which lead to the evolution of this final draft. To those who participated in the process, thank you.
Panel 1
Balcony view, side profile shot. A blizzard is raging through the wilds of the Canadian Shield. Spruce and pines dominate rocky hills. A lone man, Cartier, is walking through the storm draped in fur pelts with snow shoes on his feet. His foot prints are visible in the snow behind him. Those furthest away are starting to disappear as the blowing snow covers them up.
Caption: James Bay, Upper Canada. 1721
Caption: My name is Jon Cartier.
Caption: For my sins I have wandered lost and desperate in these woods for many a night, wishing to no longer hear the voice of the demon haunting my ever step.
Panel 2
Zoom in closer. Cartier has fallen onto his hands and knees face down. His furs are covered in snow and crusted with tiny ice pelts. The fur hood covering his head obscures his face.
Cartier: God, please… save me…
Panel 3
Close up of Cartier, he’s lifted his head, his face is an expression of pain, growing terror and personal insanity. A thick beard crusted with tiny ice crystals covers his face.
Cartier: Let me die.
